Three different treatment techniques are used, namely left/right discrimination training, motor imagery exercises and mirror therapy. Mirror therapy was first described for the relief of phantom pain but it has since been proven to be an effective drug-free treatment for pain. The technique involves the use of a virtual image of the affected limb to trick the brain into believing that the limb is normal, thus providing the brain with a platform from which to re-wire itself to map its new profile and compensate for the damaged limb, thereby improving the patient’s quality of life (David Butler, Neuro Orthopaedic Institute).
